The title of R_Garcia’s tenth full-length album, Resurgens, evokes Atlanta, comebacks, and revenants. With chair-boogie beats and sometimes stunningly poetic lyrics that come at you from odd directions (“feelin’ sweeter than a fruit fly...”), the tracks comment on the evolution of electronic music from 80s techno-pop to the present in ways both wry and surreal, as if you are listening to someone’s life-long collection of songs you’ve somehow never heard before, or perhaps the soundtrack to their dreams.

“Seawater” combines a strong New Wave drum beat with an ELO-style vocal treatment to create the sonic equivalent of an Instamatic beach photo. “Your Middle Name” mashes a glitch-hop beat, orchestration, and a dash of blues into a romantic reproach. “Be Lax” pulses with dance-rock precision and echoes of Underworld can be heard in the guitar and synth-vocals, while in “The Year 100,000,” strident Ramones-infused drums and guitars crash a Beach Boy’s concert and evolve into something new under the sun.
